Mary Sandfort Obituary

Mary Bock Sandfort, 97, of Thompson and formerly of Woodland Park, NJ, died Thursday March 28th at Allied Services Hospice, Scranton.  She was the widow of Leonard Sandfort.

Born in Pleasant Mount, daughter of the late John S. and Helen Hutyan Bock, she was a member of SS Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church, Union Dale, and a graduate of Pleasant Mount High School.  During World War II, Mary left Pleasant Mount “The Mountain” for New Jersey to work and help the war effort by making parachutes.  It was there she met and married her husband Leonard, settling in Wayne, NJ.  After her husband’s death in 1960, Mary worked for Two Guys from Harrison Department Store as a cashier.  Later, she went on to work for Tropar Trophy in Florham Park, NJ, on the assembly line making quality trophies for 50 years.  She also worked part time at Wolfson Supermarket in Lincoln Park, NJ, before retiring at the age of 84.  Mary had a deep faith in the Lord and was a hard worker, raising 3 young children.  She always put family first, but found spare time to crochet, knit, cook, and do word search puzzles.  She enjoyed shopping and had a great interest in baseball, especially when she could watch the Yankees on TV.

Surviving are a son: Dennis Sandfort and wife Jean, Chipley, FL; a daughter: Donna O’Brien, Thompson; 8 grandchildren: Samantha Dolph; Keith Sandfort; Leonard O'Brien; Jay Sandfort; Natasha Sandfort; Renee Sandfort; Brian O'Brien; Annette Perry; 6 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; a brother: Paul Bock, Union Dale; a sister: Nadine Lambert, Sparta, NJ; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter: Doris Sandfort; a grandson: William O’Brien; a great grandson: William E. Dolph; two brothers: Joseph and John “Jack” Bock; three sisters: Helen Bock; Tatiana Rozdilsky; and Elizabeth Demianovich.
